Legal Document Translation Template Prompt
Translating a contract is not translating a text. Defined terms have to stay consistent, structure has to survive, and concepts that exist in one legal system and not in another have to be handled explicitly rather than approximated. This prompt sets those constraints before the translation starts.
How to Use the Prompt:
- The document: paste the text, keeping numbering and cross-references intact.
- The language pair and the jurisdictions: translating an Italian contract for an English reader is different from translating it to be governed by English law.
- The defined terms: list the terms that must be rendered identically every time they appear.
Benefits of Using this Prompt:
- Defined terms stay defined: a term translated two ways in the same contract creates an ambiguity that did not exist in the original.
- Structure survives: clause numbering and cross-references are how a contract is read and cited.
- Untranslatable concepts are flagged: institutions with no equivalent in the target system get a note instead of a misleading approximation.
- A usable working draft: not a final legal translation, but a solid starting point for whoever has to certify it.
- Faster cross-border review: the counterparty can read the document while the certified version is being prepared.
Sending a client's contract to an external translation service is a confidentiality decision before it is a linguistic one, and it is often the reason the translation never gets done.
